My name is Arun Vasudev - you may simply call me Arun.

I am a fulltime private tutor in Singapore focusing on O-level A/E Mathematics and A-level H2 Mathematics. If you're looking for a great Mathematics coach who cares deeply about making a difference, then I'm your guy!

A brief introduction about myself: I came to Singapore at the age of 17 as a Ministry of Education scholar. I completed my BEng in Computer Engineering and MEng in Electrical Engineering from NUS, and have been working in the industry since. In what's relevent to the present context, I have always done pretty well academically - I aced the ICSE (equivalent of O-level), the ISC (equivalent of A-level), and the highly competitive Indian Institute of Technology Joint Entrance Examination in India, and was under full scholarship throughout my undergraduate years at NUS. I completed my Masters at NUS as a research scholar as well.

Tutoring style

My philosophy of learning Mathematics is simple. What we learn to do, we learn by doing. You gain confidence as a problem solver by solving problems, reflecting on your solutions, and finding more problems to solve.

I'm known to be a cheerful, friendly, but ultimately challenging taskmaster - exactly how you'd expect a good personal trainer to be. Having tutored students since my undergraduate and graduate periods, I am well familiar with the Mathematics syllabus and the challenges students face when struggling with new concepts.

My method consists of first ensuring that the students' foundational concepts are solid. That done, I concentrate on giving them a truly varied Mathematical workout, rapidly covering the typical questions you get in the exams (and more!). I am of course always available to clear any conceptual roadblocks they may face. The focus is, however, to get students to do as much work as possible by themselves.

To become great at solving problems, Mathematical ideas that appear arbitrary and artificial at first need to become first class citizens in one's mind, as familiar and intuitive as the natural numbers themselves. This happens only by wrestling with the ideas and problems involving the ideas for a sufficient period of time. I have noticed that my main value is to remove the unnecessary frustration from this process and make it more interesting, even exciting!

I also hope to pass on to the students some of my enthusiasm for the subject. Even the seemingly commonest concepts you learn at school are fine examples of Mathematical innovation. When you consider just how bankrupt our minds would be without these ideas and the knowledge of nature they enable, you see them in a different light. We should be thrilled at having a chance to learn them! Our lives would be the richer for it.

Rates for one-one tutoring.

The rate is SGD 50 / hour with a minimum of 1.5 hours at each session. The amount varies based on the distance I have to travel to reach your place.
